Dragon Fli Empire (Calgary)

Dragon Fli Empire

The DFE is a breath of fresh air, reminding music fans why they first fell in love with hip hop. Smooth, carefree beats combine with airy yet clever-and-catchy rhymes. Formed in 2002, DFE is boldly changing people’s perceptions of what hip hop should or shouldn’t sound like in 2009 with their new album Redefine. Fresh off the heels of their successful 2008 Intermission EP (which garnered favorable reviews on Okayplayer.com and RapReviews.com, quickly becoming a favorite on indie radio), the DFE is back with a tasty main course of hip hop blended with jazz, funk, soul and electronic vibes. Coming along for the ride are hip hop favourites Masta Ace, Cadence Weapon, Raashan Ahmad, Ohmega Watts, Moka Only and Josh Martinez. The recently-released first video for the album, “Outside Inn,” featuring Cadence Weapon is quickly on its way to becoming a hit. DFE has shared the stage with many top hip hop acts including De La Soul, Mos Def, The Beatnuts, Pete Rock, and Del tha Funkee Homosapien. They have played prestigious festivals like Montreal's Under Pressure and Ottawa's Alberta Scene, the 2005 Western Canadian Music Awards, 2008 JunoFest, and 2008 Sled Island Festival. They were the first hip hop group featured on the annual MUCH does Calgary showcase on Much Music in 2005. Regularly featured on CBC Radio 3, they hold the honor of being the first artist ever played on their highly respected podcast. In 2006, they were featured performers on CBC Radio One’s Go. In 2007, Dragon Fli Empire had a live concert broadcast on CBC Radio Two (opening for Kris Demeanor) and were featured in their online “Concerts on Demand”. At the end of 2008, Dragon Fli Empire received two CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award nominations for their  Intermission EP. They were also recently featured in Japan’s esteemed REMIX magazine.
